Section 504 of the 1996 International Mechanical Code state

With the above being said, these requirements would be for use in building constructed today. I do not know when your building was constructed or the codes in force at that time. So, while you may not meet the above requirements, it may be correct for when the building was built.

From a safety standpoint, you should have the ductwork inspected periodically and cleaned when needed. Also, the connection from the dryer should be as short and solid as possible. A long piece of flexible hose will allow lint to easily build-up.

DRYER VENT HAZARDS IN PALATINE

ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS

Over the last eighteen months the Palatine Fire Department has responded to three fires which started as a result of lint built up in and around dryer ventilation piping. This has pointed out the need for an explanation of how these types of fires begin and how they can be prevented.

At first blush, lint does not appear to be much of a potential hazard. But, lint is an extremely flammable material. It is quite easily ignited and it spreads fire very quickly. Add to this, that lint is likely to collect in locations which are difficult to reach or clean, such as behind dryers or in wall stud spaces and you have the potential for a damaging and life threatening situation.

It is imperative that dryers be maintained on a regular basis. Dryer lint screens should be cleaned with every load of laundry. Ventilation piping should be installed to your dryer manufacturer=s specifications ( see your dryers installation manual ). Ventilation ducting should be made of heavy gauge galvanized material wherever possible. Flexible ventilation piping should be kept to the minimum length necessary. Metal ventilation ducts can be cleaned by a reputable HVAC contractor and flexible ventilation hoses should be replaced when lint begins to build up. Dryers should never be left running when you leave your home or at night when you are asleep due to the possible fire hazard.

If you have any questions please contact Lt. Scott Ohlrich at the Palatine Fire Department Fire Prevention Division, phone 359-9029.
